The shelter began operation in 1987 after a local task force determined there was a need for this type facility in our community. The shelter was named to honor the memory of Catherine Harris Barber who was a native and lifetime humanitarian of Wilkes County. Since its beginning, the shelter has provided services to many who are in crisis situations by providing a safe, warm, dry place to sleep along with food, bath and laundry facilities. Anyone in need of temporary shelter is eligible for service.
